A Stand Out Resume

Making your resume stand out:

I once received a resume with an objective that read: To eat more chicken

Now how funny is that?

Imagine how bored us HR girls can become reading the same …to seek a dynamic opportunity within a company in which I can grow and learn and grow and learn and grow and grow and grow while I grow ….what are you grass seeds???

The Chicken Guy didn’t get the job. BUT, he did make me smile. So much so that, to this day, I still have his resume on file in hopes that something will come up that might suit his unique poultry qualifications.

Here is an unsuspecting tip that I never thought would make a headline here:

The resumes that I remember and hold on to the most are the ones that I receive by mail…yes that’s right. You remember…. post office, angry workers, envelopes, stamps?

I receive a villion resumes via the internet.  The few times that I have received resumes on beautiful thick bonded paper, I’ve had to hold myself back from sniffing the paper in ecstasy. I have kept them all and put them on top of my Consideration pile (if they are qualified, obviously).

Now not everyone feels the same way, but imagine having someone come out and wash your windows for you when you are getting gas. They used to remember? Well some things still hold their value and are worth being revisited. A beautifully, hand received, well prepared cover letter and resume are not to be ignored. They indicate time and effort as well as pride and maybe a little bit of patience (as they know snail mail will take longer).

Just a thought. Never hurts to try.

ANOTHER RESUME THOUGHT:

If you were considering tweaking your resume for a specific job, it might be a good idea to weave the elements of what skills the specific company is seeking from a candidate into what skills you have to offer on your resume.

Get it?

They want. You have.

Might make a match made in heaven. They will not believe their good fortune in finding a candidate with the exact same skill sets that they are seeking. It’s a miracle.

Just to be clear…..Be sure that you have all the required skills before stating it on your resume (false advertising remember?).
