ABOUT FINDING A JOB

So where do you look for a job when you need one?

Good question.

We all (obviously you got here) know how to surf the internet for what we want or need.

There are many many internet job sites. Google is your best friend in this area.

You can also look up your local newspaper online for more local listings. Perhaps even pick up a real newspaper. Haven't done that in years but I still remember when ....

Now if you are getting desperate and you need to find something, even if it not what you really want full time but need to make some kind of money, there is always the option of walking into a place and asking if they are hiring.

RADICAL.  I know.

This avenue is a little unconventional these days as we are so damn high techy and can’t look up from our computers, but I actually hired a few people that came into the office (dressed professionally as if they were on an actual interview) and asked if we were hiring.

I had them fill out applications and it was lucky for them that I had the time to sit and chat with them briefly. Turns out, we needed someone a few weeks later and rather than putting an ad online, I already had the perfect person (Hero here).

Saved the company money and the applicants efforts paid off.

So where what kind of places should you walk into?

How about a place where you think you would like to work.Someplace close to home and has a reputable business.

Just go!

Make several copies of your resume (on thick bonded paper with matching envelopes), DRESS UP and start to walk or drive down your downtown neighborhood.

Stop in a few places with a bright, energetic smile (don’t you dare walk in with a sour face or a defeated attitude) and ask to see the Manager.

Sometimes you will get the actual Manager and sometimes you will get the $8.50/hr employee acting on his or her behalf because the real Manager is too busy.

In any case (remember my getting past the Receptionist piece), make nice to whomever you finally get to speak with.  Don’t look disappointed that you didn’t get a real Manager, look unsettlingly pleased at this happy turn of events. Here is your chance to find out the real scoop and make a potential ally.

Ask the person if you could fill out an application for any positions that the company might be hiring for.

Why not just ask if the company is hiring now?

Because, your answer to the later question, will more than likely be a flat Yes or No.

You want to avoid any cold cut responses (they leave you with no place to go).

The first question will allow some time-even if it is just a fraction of a second-to think about not wanting to look rude by not giving you an application.

If you can see that they are busy, talk fast. No way to make a friend by holding them up from doing their job.

If they are slow, try to engage them in conversation.

But get that application and try to get any information from them as possible, i.e., have they hired a lot of people lately? Does he/she like working there? How long have they been there? etc. You will be surprised at what a willing, open ear can be filled with.

Be friendly and stay focused. Thank them for their time and then move on to the next place.

Keep up the sunny disposition for the remainder of the day’s journey.

It is a step definitely worth trying.  You are bound to get lucky.  If not that day, if you make a good enough impression with the right person, perhaps you will get lucky sometime in the near future.

If not, it has to feel good to take charge of your day and do something positive towards your goal to get a job.

Staying home and watching T.V. will never get you where you want and need to be.

Right Maury?
